HOUSE BILL 765 MOVES TO HOUSING & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE — TOWN OF HARRISBURG URGES RESIDENT ACTION

Published Monday, May 5, 2025

The Town of Harrisburg urges residents to act now, as House Bill 765 advances to the North Carolina House Housing & Development Committee. The committee is scheduled to meet on Tuesday, May 6, at 12:00 PM to discuss the bill.

House Bill 765 proposes sweeping changes that threaten the safety, character, and sustainability of our Town. The Town warns that this legislation would lead to inconsistent housing standards, overburdened infrastructure, and erosion of the community’s careful development planning policies.

Supporters of this legislation, including statewide developers and real estate lobbying groups, claim it is designed to promote affordable housing. However, this bill includes no meaningful affordability requirements and could drive home prices higher by allowing rapid, unregulated development that bypasses community input and oversight.

“This bill strips communities like ours of the ability to plan for safe and sustainable growth,” said Harrisburg Town Manager, Rob Donham. “House Bill 765 eliminates the local standards and safeguards that protect our neighborhoods, infrastructure, and environment. It hands the reins to developers while silencing the voice of our residents.”

Residents are strongly encouraged to contact members of the North Carolina House Housing & Development Committee before the May 6 meeting and urge them to vote NO on HB 765.

Chairs:

Rep. Mark Brody – Mark.Brody@ncleg.gov – (704) 965-6585

Rep. Jeff Zenger – Jeff.Zenger@ncleg.gov – (919) 733-5787
