Eli Lilly and Company Introduces Senior Automation Engineer for Concord Site

Eli Lilly and Company, a 147-year-old Fortune 500 global company, is expanding by building a $1 billion manufacturing site in Concord. Dedicated to finding treatments for cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more, Lilly’s new Concord facility will help the company manufacture injectable medications, assemble medical devices and expand its packaging operations. Lilly plans to hire 600+ employees who share in the company’s purpose to create medicines that make life better for people around the world.

Meet one of Lilly’s first employees for the Concord site, Jared Books, Senior Automation Engineer, to learn more about Lilly.

Describe your role:
My background is in manufacturing and machine design. At Concord, I’m helping integrate new machines and equipment in the device assembly and packaging areas to help Concord operate efficiently and reliably.

What made you choose a career at Lilly?
It directly aligned with my background and experience in manufacturing. I also like that the company offers many career possibilities within Lilly and that the company values [Integrity, Excellence and Respect for People] align with my own values. I find it very fulfilling to be part of a 38,000+ global team that provides hope and solutions to patients and their families.

What kind of people are you meeting in your job?
Lilly employees work collaboratively and cross-functionally—I’m always meeting new people and learning from others. I work with co-workers with different backgrounds and experiences and interact with subject matter experts in a wide range of fields. It really is a melting pot, but we are all driven by a common goal.

What’s been your favorite work experience so far?
I had the opportunity to travel to Switzerland to see new manufacturing equipment being built. This allowed me to see firsthand what would eventually be at the Concord site.

What are some of your favorite company benefits? Why?
You are treated as an actual employee, not a statistical figure. Benefits such as tuition assistance and excellent health insurance allow employees to focus on their life, not how we are going to afford it.

How do you balance work with life outside of work?
The flexibility to take time off is incredible! Our wellbeing here is truly valued. Employees aren’t simply given personal days but there’s an expectation that you will take care of yourself so you can perform at your best. Lilly is by far the most understanding, practical company I’ve worked for to date.

How does your job allow you to give back to the community?
Global Day of Service is one of the company’s biggest events where employees worldwide give back to their local communities. Lilly encourages employees to get involved in many ways from serving on local boards to supporting local United Way agencies to participating in initiatives to preserve the environment and natural resources.
