The Community Free Clinic of Cabarrus County invited their fellow Chamber members over to help celebrate a huge milestone – their 30th anniversary!
Dr. George Liles and Dr. David Lockhart founded The Community Free Clinic of Cabarrus County in February 1994. They recognized that many low-income working age adults in Cabarrus County did not have health insurance and therefore, did not have access to medical care or prescription medication to treat chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, and COPD. Since its founding, the Clinic has evolved over time to treat acute illnesses and now preventative care for those who are not eligible for Medicaid, are between jobs, or work for a company who cannot offer health insurance.
The Community Free Clinic moves adults in Cabarrus County towards wellness with healthcare and pharmacy services by removing the barriers of limited financial resources and lack of insurance. They increase access and provide health stabilization in the community. All of their healthcare and pharmacy services inside the Clinic are free to their patients. Liles and Lockhart found that adults with chronic illnesses would utilize the emergency department if they could not afford healthcare, but that wouldn't support long-term improvement in their health. The Clinic aims to help these patients get healthy, keeping them out of the emergency room.
The Clinic offers diagnosis, labwork, treatment, medications, specialty clinics like gynecology and podiatry, mental health, and coming soon – mobile dental clinics. They also provide supplies to patients for use in the home like blood pressure cuffs and diabetic testing supplies.
In August 2023, the Clinic announced a grant from Lowe's to renovate their facility. These renovations were completed and the Clinic was able to reopen in January, just in time for their anniversary.
