Leadership programs have been a chamber staple in Cabarrus County since the 1980s. After merging the Cabarrus County Chamber and Kannapolis Chamber in 1998, Leadership Cabarrus has flourished as part of the Cabarrus Regional Chamber. To date, the program has welcomed 400+ participants representing 143 companies!
Founded for the purpose of deepening the knowledge base of dedicated business, industry and community leaders, the program expands awareness of assets and challenges in our region. Results enrich the lives of participants and cultivate future leaders for the community. Total number of alumni, including those prior to the chambers merging, number over 625.
The program is a ten-month commitment. An evening reception/orientation is held in late August followed by a full-day retreat. Each month thereafter, class members devote one full day per month from September through May to learning about our community. Class days are planned by Leadership Cabarrus alumni serving on the Steering Committee and focus on specific sectors of our economy. Topics include history of the county, economic development, law enforcement and health and human services, to name a few.
Classes take place on the second Tuesday of each month, September through May, followed by graduation in May. Transportation on class days is provided via a nicely-appointed motor coach! Classes are planned by a dedicated alumni Steering Committee that reflect current conditions in each topic area.
The long-term benefits of community leaders gaining a more in-depth knowledge about our region pays great dividends. Learning about resources, issues, challenges and opportunities equips class members with an understanding of networks and solutions. Putting that knowledge into practice through legacy class projects prior to the May graduation strengthens the community. Past projects have included construction of a picnic shelter at a residential home for developmentally disabled citizens; "Stitched in Time" DVD about the history of textiles; creation of a six-month training program for homeowners for Habitat for Humanity; construction of a canoe/kayak launch on the Rocky River in Midland that is part of the Carolina Thread Trail; refurbishing the waiting area and children's playroom at the Community Free Clinic; and development of a Youth Leadership Cabarrus program for high school juniors.
Eligible candidates, both longtime residents and newcomers, must reside or work in Cabarrus County.
